we will name her grace
story of grace sefa-boakye (left), written by laveda drvol
Grace is now 82 years old and a much loved member of Mosaic Inland. She is part of “Primetime,” the seniors group, and stands as an example of childlike faith and God’s love. She still brings friends and family to come to know Jesus and the hope of His love. |

“Grace! Wake up, Grace!” No one was around, but the voice would not go away. Fire from a candle had reached the curtains in her children’s bedroom. Her quick action had eliminated the threat, but it was the voice that had saved them all. Grace simply smiled, “I have learned to hear my Lord. He speaks to me often. And God has guided my path my whole life. And yet, I was almost not born.”
It was 1925. Stephen and Rose had all the promise of a young marriage. Her parents came from a small town called Nkwatia, Ghana (West Africa). Life was simple and straightforward. But now, time was up for Stephen and Rose. They had not conceived a child within the first three years of marriage as expected; their marriage was seen as cursed. Stephen’s wife, Rose, was being reclaimed by her family.
“No,” crying Stephen fell to his knees but no amount of persuasion diverted them. Powerless to prevent this disaster, Stephen went to the local pastor for help. After much prayer and persuading by his pastor, Rose’s family agreed to give the marriage one more year. A child, a healthy child, must be born in that time.
Just one month later Rose became pregnant. But, both Rose and Stephen knew that was not the final answer to their prayers. Rose needed to carry the child to full term and that did not always happen. Happily the pregnancy was without a glitch and the whole community awaited God’s answer. Then, on December 23, 1926 it came, in the form of a beautiful, healthy girl.
It was a bright Sunday morning, God’s own day, and the little church in town was full of worshippers: neighbors and friends of Rose, all praising the Lord’s name. When Stephen burst into the church crying out, “a baby girl, a baby girl!” The pastor was the first to speak. “Bring her here,” he ordered. Stephen was gone just a few minutes. Then he returned with a small bundle cradled in his arms. With a heart that could not be contained, Stephen raised the little bundle and repeated “Onyame Adom, Onyame Adom.” He was singing to his maker, “By God’s grace, by God’s grace she was born. We will call her Grace.” “So you see that is how I got my name,” Grace said with a sweet smile on her face.
Stephen and Rose went on to produce nine more children, all learning to put their faith and hope in Jesus, all living in His love. |
